My Story

Hello, my name is Katy Dickenson, founder of Thrive Counselling and Wellbeing. My Journey to becoming a counsellor has been a life long ambition I finally came to after 17 years of working in the caring professions as an early years practitioner and outreach worker for families who needed extra support to help their children thrive. 
I gained a BA (hons) in Counselling from Lancaster University. Whilst a student I volunteered my time counselling young people, children and unpaid carers. In this way I gained experience of working with a vast array of mental health problems. Something I learned along the way and that is at the heart of how I work is that every single person, regardless of age or back ground is unique, and deserve to be heard and treated as such. Since qualifying I have moved my volunteer work into working in trauma based therapy for a charity that offers counselling for suvivours of sexual abuse and rape. As well as charity work my work includes offering short term counselling to employees of an NHS hospital trust,  private short and long term counselling and behavioural group work with adolesents. I have experience of working with diverse mental health problems including depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, eating disorders, identity exploration ect. 
I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I carry liability insurance and hold a clear enhanced DBS certificate.

My approach

All people are unique, we all have different ways of learning, of thinking, of being. As a Person-Centred Integrative counsellor I believe the counselling you receive should be as unique as you are. Being Person-Centred I believe you are your own expert, I believe you can lead the way and I will be there to create a safe place, free from judgement where you can explore your inner thinking. I will be there to help you make sense of your feelings, emotions and behaviours, which in turn will allow you to see yourself more clearly, where you have been, where you are now and where you want to be. Being integrative allows me to bring in different theories and techniques that may be helpful for you on your journey of self discovery be they cognitive based, motivational, mindful, education based or more creative, we will tailor your counselling sessions to meet your needs.

One Last thing

Looking inward, being reflective, learning about yourself and creating change can be exhilarating. It can make you feel ten feet tall, like you can take on anything. But it can also be scary, it can be hard. But by working together I will be there to support you, to help ease the load, to create a feeling of safety where you can feel confident to explore your issues or just to talk in safety.
